How to stop internet access on Android devices working in the background - for any app
It's an issue that's been around since the dawn of the smartphone: and Android has made strides to improve and eradicate the issue, especially on lower-end devices. But as I recently discovered, the problem can still be found, and this is why: it's not a flaw in the Android operating system itself.
The problem is that Google makes it almost impossible to eradicate certain applications from being able to send and receive data in the background. This is problematic for any app that needs to continuously do this, which includes the Twitter app. As a user of both the Chrome browser and the Twitter app, the two are regularly competing for my attention. As an individual with a limited amount of time to get stuff done, this can make me feel like I'm not being efficient with my time.
Instead, I'm constantly going back and forth between the two, and I'm wasting precious data or storage. What's more is that there are numerous extensions, such as Titanium Backup and WapdaRescue, that I could install to fix this, but I can't because I don't want them to impact my data/storage balance.
With that said, there are ways to make this less of a problem. Here are the steps I take to ensure that the Twitter app doesn't constantly use my data or storage.
Step 1: Prevent other apps from using your data or storage
This goes for any app you wish to block from accessing data and storage. This includes Flash Player, Facebook, Gmail, Tinder, Slack, and any other app you wish to prevent from accessing your data or storage.
To do this, follow these steps:
Head over to Settings and choose App permissions. Choose "Other apps" from the list. Click "Allowed queries" from the list, then click the bottom box. Click "Disable all." This way, any time an app needs to query the internet or communicate with a server, your data is freed up.
