what is a call forwarding number through a virtual number? Does virtual call forwarding exist?
virtual call forwarding is one of the many things that make Internet phone calls easier. When you call a virtual number you have to pay for the call. Also, when you call a virtual number your phone bill will show up as being from a real number (always in a different part of the country, sometimes in different parts of the world).
This is great because it means you will always see the number you called as coming from a real address. However, that doesn’t always work well with internet apps, so this can be an issue. If you’re currently using a virtual phone number to get calls through an app on your phone, the app will receive the call with that virtual number, but the call will use your cell phone number and end up costing you.
You can still call virtual numbers with regular phone numbers, but if you’re calling a business, the business will use your personal cell phone number and potentially push you over your data limit, This can be confusing.

let me show you how it works:
In iOS (and macOS) the virtual numbers are in the Phone app. Simply tap the Call Forward button, choose the business you want to call and enter your cell phone number. If the call is from your iPhone you’ll see the virtual number as an option for adding to the call. The dialer will use your cell phone number to call the virtual number.
The call will arrive at the phone number. However, this will also use your cell phone’s battery, and you may run out of data on your cell phone if you use your cellular data plan. Also, you will be billed for the call as if you had dialed a regular phone number (this will be fixed in future versions of iOS).
One other issue with virtual phone numbers (but only if you use them on an app) is you can only call certain places with virtual numbers. For example, you can’t call a US-based virtual number from the UK. When calling virtual numbers in the UK you can choose the place you want to call in the US and send it through (this will use your regular cell phone number). You don’t have to select the US even if you want to call from the UK.
You can also use virtual numbers for things other than calling. One of the better apps I’ve found is called Netvibes Call. When calling virtual numbers through Netvibes Call, your cell phone number is set as the business number.
This means the call will use your cell phone number (not your virtual number).
However, Netvibes Call uses Wi-Fi, not your cellular network. When you call a virtual number using Netvibes Call the virtual number will use Wi-Fi. You don’t get charged for the call (unless you go over your data limit). Additionally, Netvibes Call uses your cell phone’s data plan to receive calls. This can help with the amount of data you use on your phone. Netvibes Call has a limit of 250MB per month for data use on the phone (only for calls).
If you’re using your phone for other services (like texting and emailing) you may end up using up the data on your cell phone, so the data used on Netvibes Call may be unlimited (this gets fixed in future versions of Netvibes Call).
Using virtual numbers can be a good option for both business and personal calls. You can use them for things like emails, social media, or gaming. This makes it easier to call the business you want to use for your social media, game, or social media apps.
Virtual phone numbers can have other issues too.
If you’re calling from an overseas country or if you have trouble connecting to Wi-Fi in that country, then it’s possible you can lose your connection (this can be fixed with your Wi-Fi network, your cell phone carrier, or phone service). Also, if your virtual phone number is connected to your virtual phone number and virtual phone number account, then it may act as a traditional phone number in that it can still ring.
However, if the number is disconnected, then calls from that number will be blocked. If you’re worried about this or another issue, you should contact the service you’re using.
Postscript: By the way, some readers have called me to ask about the situation with call blocking in Android. The issue here is that Android does not allow call blocking for virtual numbers. Many Android users have reported this. Also, Android has a virtual number tool in the Phone app (but only for calling). Android also allows you to change the virtual phone number when setting up a new phone number.
This is how you can quickly and easily change the number for your virtual number when you want to call from an app.
I recently switched from using the virtual phone number to the virtual number in my company email account for my social media accounts. I was able to do this for three reasons:
1. Calling virtual numbers on Android is often slower than calling normal numbers. The phone call charges are a lot cheaper than the data charges for a virtual phone number. This is what the Virtual Phone Number for Work app says about calling virtual numbers.
2. Using a virtual number for social media apps makes it easier to connect to Wi-Fi on my phone, which helps me stay connected and keeps data usage down. (I’ve also found that my Wi-Fi is often stronger than my cellular network. I’ll use my cell phone data plan for streaming and other things, but I’ll use Wi-Fi for social media).
3. When calling a virtual number from an app (like Facebook) I can quickly disable calling (you’ll still get an email notification when you do). When calling a virtual number from a social media app, you need to enable calling, which could potentially bring down your battery. (I tried enabling calling for Facebook in Facebook. I immediately received a notice that I was not using my data plan for the app).
To use the virtual number for social media apps I’ll turn on auto-deploy on the app, choose the ‘Call Virtual Number’ option (after setting my phone as a local number), then disable calling (when I want to call from the app).
