How to compress JPEG Images in Bulk on Android Phone?
Benefits Image Compressor 2017 is an Open Source, cross-platform image compression tool by Jan Benefits (Benjamin Malcolm), the creator of Image Magic. According to the manual:
Compressions may be done to any size image type: bitmap images, PNGs, JPEGs, and so on. The pre-compressed format of the image can be fine-tuned to match the file type of the compressed image (RGB, TIFF, ACDC, etc.) using filters and regular expression modifications.
Specialized compression algorithms can be written to optimize certain elements of the image (quality of the text, sharpening, clarity, etc.), or maybe driven using an appropriate source image. Benefits Image Compressor 2017 supports the compression of one or more image files or video files.
From a large set of supported image formats, compressors can be programmed in a number of ways:

Android apps now have image processing tools built right into the platform: Google Camera, for instance, or the Camera app that comes with most OEM-made Android devices. However, many image processing apps exist, for a range of different image formats: .jpeg, .jpeg+grids, .jpgx, .jpgx.jpg, .jpeg, .jpeg-swiss, .jpg.jpgdae, and so on.
What they all have in common is that image format files typically use compression, specifically sharpening and crop-binning.
We’re taking a look at three of these apps for Android, as they are widely used in image processing circles.
Bit rabbit Plus, Image Optim, and Photoshop Express all compress images using some form of either sharpening or crop-binning.

Bit rabbit Plus is a popular app to compress images using pixel-binning.
What is pixel-binning?
Pixel-binning is a technique used in image compressors to make the most out of pixel density.
It’s a pretty simple process: Bit rabbit Plus sets pixel sizes and adjusts the image to be compressed in a way that minimizes the difference between the largest and smallest pixels. For a pixel image that has 160 pixels per meter, this effectively decreases the size of the image by 160 pixels.
Is this a thing on Android?
Image filtering is a difficult issue. The Android platform requires a GPU, and image filters are not typically included. Without the right graphics card, these types of image filters are only going to be a minor benefit. Image filters are usually added through the phone’s imaging chip.
We’ve seen this happen through three methods:
First is using a mobile device like Android. For pixel-binning to work well, these images should be rendered by the device’s imaging chip, not the computer’s processor. The other problem with mobile-related image processing tools is that they require a specific toolset, so they’re only compatible with a limited range of devices, and the compatibility range gets smaller over time. For example, image-saving apps like Tiny Lens Enhanced don’t support phones as far back as Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).
There is also Google’s Android Image Filter API, but this isn’t used often. The API is typically used by apps with GPU support, to do things like auto-brightness and auto-resizing images.
Lastly, there is Photoshop’s Image Compressor. This is a mature technology that is quite common, but it doesn’t provide an Android-specific interface, so it doesn’t have many customers. Most professional photo editors will stick with Photoshop Express and Bitrabbit Plus for mobile image processing.
Google Camera
Photoshop Express is the simplest and most widely used application for compression on Android, at least for most people. Photoshop Express includes editing tools like exposure bracketing, profiles, brush techniques, and color correction, and automatically handles sharing images on social media with ease.
However, Adobe’s Photoshop Express application isn’t the best tool for squeezing the best images out of your images. For that, we recommend taking a look at Google Camera.
Google Camera is a pure photo-specific image compression app. It only uses compression, sharpening, and crop-binning to make your image look better, though it does provide some editing tools and a zoom.
So what does it do?
Pixel-binning is a way to make pictures look sharper than they naturally would, by grouping up the smallest, sharpest pixels and using a custom filter to keep them together. This technique works particularly well for people with high-resolution smartphones with poor resolution cameras.
Google Camera makes the most out of a pixel-binned image by dividing up the colors evenly in the image. It also uses sharpening to further reduce noise and clutter from areas with small pixels. And it reduces the size of the pixel-binned areas so that they look much smaller than they are.
This is a complex technique, and all of it is done on the CPU rather than the graphics processor. If you’re worried about CPU performance, Google Camera will take up a little bit more processing time than Photoshop Express, but not much.
This is the kind of thing that can push your smartphone to its limits, but it’s also something that most users aren’t going to notice.
Other options
Although Photoshop Express is the default image processing app for Android devices, it’s not the best choice. Pixel-binning is more complicated, and most people don’t have the experience to appreciate the benefits of pixel-binning. You’re also unlikely to use Google Camera to edit your images. If you’re worried about file size, Photoshop Express is less likely to have problems.
If you have an Android device, but don’t really want to use Google’s default image processing application, it might be better to try an app like Image Compressor, and it has some cool features that can help you tweak and improve your image.
